As much as I like the idea, I would not want them to put it into effect simply because I want to know who actually says things like "lolz" and other such things, so I know not to party with them.

That's a great idea.
No.
That's an amazing idea.
No.
That's an idea of the century. I am not kidding. I know I need more self-control but I actually explode from inside out when I see someone typing 'u' instead of 'you'. I don't care about grp, i or lolz but plz is also annoying.
Of course that won't help much. Today I read a (non intentionally) hilarious line.
Player: any1 sellin lenin plz???
Player: any1?
Wow! I mean Lenin didn't even have a crossbow, I bet!

I dunno...
lolz > lolz(I-am-a-dimwit)
I think that would do the trick for me

I would like an advanced chat filter so I could not have to hear ANY of the people selling crap when I didn't want to. I could just ask chat to not show anything with "buy" "sell" "WTB" or "WTS" and that would eliminate much of the problem. Most of the people smart enough to use words as big as "purchase" or "market" are also smart enough to click the little trade tab when they want to hawk their goods.

I confess that the Lenin/crossbow joke is over my head... (I even tried googling for it).
Playing last night led to yet another situation where I would have died for this feature. I'm sure you've all seen someone accuse another person of being a scammer (ie. selling Althea's Ashes for 2k, or a casino). Well that happened and out came the belligerent racial slurs and obscenely crude comments aloud for all to hear. Ignoring a player, unfortunately, doesn't hide their !all text and leaving the zone can be troublesome when you are busy getting a group together.

don't forget the all important one:
lfg > Looking for group
Problem with turning like 'r' into 'are' is that suddenly railroad becomes areailareoad.
You'd need an incredibly well programmed filter to do this with.
and Piexags, just don't inable the filter.

Not really - just check for the string " r " instead of checking for the character 'r'. Not a huge headache to change that programming.

I'd agree that that would be an awesome filter, but like the second person said, I'd like to know who is saying what and who I shouldn't party with(because I don't want to party with a person who doesn't take there language seriously). I can stand people not punctuating(because I don't when I'm in-game) but when people are spelling me as mi to cut down time...yeah...then it's hit the fan. I think if this kind of idea went in to effect, they should have all the different types of filters(for bad language) and have them comboed up with this new filter in all the possible ways(9 being possible if you want light, medium, and heavy filtering for this new one).
Anyways, great idea, I'd like to see it in effect, if possible, and if it would be optional.

This sounds like a great idea, especially if it could be customisable on the client side, so we can choose what we want things to translate into.
One problem I see though is that sometimes those abbreviated words can mean more than one thing such as "ur" meaning You are, or your.

I used the search button!
Bump. Customizable chat filter would rock.
What it comes to word substitution, maybe the replaced words would show on different color (a shade or two up or down compared to other text) and hovering/hitting a button would show the text as originally typed.
Another option would be redirecting lines with certain phrases, like 'wts'/'wtb' onto different channel.

I suggested this elsewhere. Any message with "WTS" "WTB" or "WTT" in it automatically gets posted in the Trade channel, no matter what.
While we're at it, any messsage with more than five mistakes that the spellcheck system corrects, doesn't get posted at all. That way, the idiot who can't speak correctly also can't say anything at all, so there's no chance of getting stuck in a group with them. A lot of people might not like it, but that's their fault for being lazy and/or stupid.

Now I'm not the greatest at spelling but I also get annoyed with the lack of even decent spelling in GW. I would also like to see that anything with WTS WTB and WTT go right into the trade channel. Currently I have trade and local chat turned off because of all the crap. And those stars and *** and anything else people use.
I do however have nothing against LFG or GLF. Its a short form like saying FBI or CSI or LAPD.
I actually saw (which was funny) yesterday someone spamming "GLF wammos and momes invite yourself" (warrior monks and monk mesmers)
I would also like an option were I can enter words and short forms for words I find offensive so that my filter blocks them. During factions preview... I saw more "STFU u N**er" then I cared to see in a life time. I'd like a way to edit my own filter.

Unfortunately, if words like, ----roach, and ---hes for Barradin are any indication, the world filter isn't all that great. But, seeing as it'd be a choice thing, and I'm all for choices, I still support this.
People would just figure out how to make better use of the filter to fix what doesn't work out the way they thought it would.

Excellent idea, I totally agree. I can't stand people who are too lazy to type a whole 2 letters more(like "r" and "are"), also people who speak 1337 FTW!!1!11! And those who don't seem to realize their caps lock is on. And the words "n00b"..."pwn"...and so on. I guess these people think it makes them look smart, that they notice how "Y" and "why" rhyme? I do hope they make some sort of customizable chat filter, that would make dealing with random people a lot less painful.
